While cities occupy only 2% of the planet’s landmass, they consume over 65% of the world’s energy and account for more than 70% of global man-made CO2 emissions. Currently 75% of European citizens live in cities and this percentage is expected to rise to 80% by 2050 and the EU aims to be climate neutral in 2050 (Mission Area: Climate Neutral and Smart Cities). This ambition requires integrating, consolidating, and scaling up existing (and prospective) European research and innovation (R&I) that contribute to emission reduction at multiple levels, at a rapid scale and an active focus on citizen engagement and social innovation, through an inclusive and collaborative approach that leaves no one behind.
To contribute to this ambition, it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the next episode of e-Conference on Climate Neutral Cities on #SustainableWednesdays starting on 21st of April, hosted by Maastricht University (UM).
